Hearing scheduled for proposed shellfish leases in Carteret County

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Marine Fisheries is set to conduct a public hearing regarding proposed shellfish leases in Carteret County. The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, both in-person at the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries Central District Office located at 5285 Hwy 70 W, Morehead City, and via Webex.

The session will cover several applications for shellfish bottom and water column leases:

- Jacob Milchuck has submitted an application for a 6.17-acre lease in Adams Creek.

- C.I. Salts Oyster Company, LLC, led by Ralph W. Brittingham Jr., seeks a 4.22-acre lease in North Bay.

- Isaiah Smith from 35 North Mariculture, LLC has applied for a 5.2-acre lease also in North Bay.

- Peerless Oyster, LLC with Frank Milchuck is pursuing a 5.78-acre lease in Adams Creek.

- Beaufort Shellfish Farms, LLC operated by Tiffany and Jason Smith aims for a 5.01-acre lease below the Hwy 70 bridge in North River.

- Bryan L. Snyder is applying for a 2.98-acre lease in White Oak River.

- Mason Allen from Changing Tide Renovations, LLC is looking at a potential 7.69-acre lease in South River.

- The UNC Institute of Marine Sciences represented by Thomas Clerkin proposes a demonstration lease covering 0.97 acres in Newport River.

These areas will be marked accordingly as Proposed Shellfish Bottom Lease or Water Column Lease with specific identifiers.

Public comments are invited either during the hearing or through written submissions until Friday, March 14 at 5 p.m. Interested individuals can register to comment on-site between 5 p.m. and the start of the hearing or participate online via Webex.
