Duke Energy Florida is marking Engineers Week by focusing on the critical role of power grid dispatchers and the necessity of training new engineers. The week, recognized from February 16 to February 22, underscores the importance of these professionals who oversee the grid that serves over two million customers across 35 counties.

Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida's state president, emphasized the vital role dispatchers play: “Not only are power grid dispatchers responsible for keeping our line crews safe – making life-critical decisions all day, every day – but they also help ensure our customers receive the reliable service they need to lead full, productive lives.” She acknowledged the high-risk nature of their work and expressed gratitude for those who support this essential service.

Training to become an associate power grid dispatcher at Duke Energy Florida’s Distribution Control Center involves nearly two years of rigorous classroom and on-the-job experience. This role demands problem-solving skills often acquired through electrical engineering degrees or utility line work backgrounds.

Dispatchers operate in 12-hour rotating shifts to maintain round-the-clock coverage at the control center. They coordinate with field crews handling infrastructure upgrades or responding to outages due to storms. Their responsibilities include operating complex computer systems and alarms while employing innovative tools to minimize or prevent customer outages.

Maintaining a steady pipeline of trained dispatchers is crucial for Duke Energy Florida's operational success and customer well-being. Information about careers at the Distribution Control Center can be found on duke-energy.com/Our-Company/Careers.
