The Duke Energy Foundation has announced a donation of $40,000 to the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas (AAAPP) to provide severe weather kits for older adults ahead of the 2025 hurricane season. The contribution aims to help approximately 1,000 seniors prepare for potential severe weather conditions.
"Helping seniors stay safe in their homes is the mission of the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas, so we are so grateful for Duke Energy's support of our Senior Storm Kit program," stated Ann Marie Winter, executive director of AAAPP. "Duke's funding will help about 1,000 seniors cope when severe weather hits. We also appreciate that Duke Energy is so committed to our partnership that their team members helped assemble all of these crucial kits."
The kits include essential items such as a flashlight with batteries, a battery-powered radio, and a mini first-aid kit among other necessary supplies. To support AAAPP further, Duke Energy employees volunteered to assemble these kits.
“Last year’s hurricane season demonstrates the importance of being prepared. Volunteering to assemble severe weather kits allows us to reach our most vulnerable communities,” said Marc Hoenstine, managing director of economic development for Duke Energy Florida.
A total of 25 volunteers from Duke Energy participated in assembling the kits for distribution throughout Pinellas and Pasco counties.
“Volunteerism is a fundamental part of Duke Energy's commitment to our communities," said Melissa Seixas, state president for Duke Energy Florida. "Strong, vibrant communities are the result of hard work, significant investments of time and key partnerships.”
In addition to this initiative, customers are encouraged to prepare for storm season by following safety tips and using resources like the Red Cross Emergency app.
The Duke Energy Foundation provides over $30 million annually in philanthropic support across various communities where its customers reside. Funded by shareholders, it focuses on addressing community needs effectively.
Duke Energy Florida operates under its parent company Duke Energy and serves around 2 million customers in Florida with substantial energy capacity. The broader company aims at transitioning towards clean energy while maintaining reliability and affordability.
