FEMA has approved a 30-day extension for disaster survivors in North Carolina to apply for individual assistance, following a request from Governor Josh Stein. The new deadline is set for April 7, 2025. Governor Stein expressed gratitude towards FEMA and the Trump Administration, as well as the state's Congressional delegation, for their support in extending the program.

Governor Stein emphasized the importance of this extension, stating: “This is a positive step forward, and I urge affected residents from western North Carolina to apply for FEMA funding to help them get back on their feet.” He also highlighted ongoing efforts to secure additional federal support for recovery initiatives.

The extension applies to homeowners and renters across multiple counties who suffered uninsured losses due to Tropical Storm Helene. Last month, Governor Stein sought $19 billion in federal funds aimed at infrastructure restoration and reducing future disaster impacts. Additionally, he encouraged public participation in finalizing an Action Plan for distributing $1.4 billion from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Survivors can apply through various channels: visiting local Disaster Recovery Centers, calling the FEMA hotline at 1-800-621-3362, or going online to disasterassistance.gov. Those with insurance are advised to file claims before seeking FEMA assistance but do not need to wait for settlements before applying.

For those denied assistance, appeals can be submitted through similar methods. The North Carolina Disaster Case Management Program (NC-DCM) remains available for further aid, having managed over 2,700 cases since December.
