The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Water Resources (DWR) is responding to an animal waste spill affecting Carltons Mill Run creek in Duplin County.

The spill, originating from C&J Finishers farm on Carrolls Road near Warsaw, was caused by a broken irrigation hydrant. Approximately 95,000 gallons of waste entered an unnamed tributary leading to Carltons Mill Run, which flows toward Stewarts Creek. The incident began on March 4 and continued until early March 5.

According to the DWR, "The permittee contained and removed waste from the impacted stream." Additionally, samples have been taken by DWR staff to assess further impacts. It has been confirmed that there are no public drinking water system intakes in the affected area.

DWR will maintain oversight of water quality in the region. Future actions related to this spill will be documented and available in the permit file on Laserfiche.
