Town of Fuquay-Varina issued the following announcement on Dec. 7.
As we enter the holiday shopping season, the Fuquay-Varina Police Department will start utilizing a steady blue cruise light installed on all patrol vehicles. The purpose of using the blue cruise lights is to provide more of a presence, increase police visibility, and deter criminal activity in our community. The blue cruise lights located on both sides of the vehicle’s roof-mounted light bar, are a steady blue and will not flash, blink, or move.
“The safety of our citizens and visitors during the evening hours and holiday shopping season is our highest priority. We will continue to gauge new and proactive measures to guarantee a safe community. The implementation of the blue cruise lights is an example of a proactive measure,” said Police Chief Brandon Medina.
If officers are conducting a traffic stop or responding to an immediate emergency, the officer will still activate the patrol vehicle’s standard flashing pattern and the vehicle’s siren.
In North Carolina, the Wilmington Police Department, Landis Police Department, and Lincolnton Police Department have utilized the blue cruise lights. Across the nation, the Washington D.C. Metro Police, Memphis Police Department, Gwinnett County Police Department, Philadelphia Police Department, Cincinnati Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and many other agencies have also used the blue cruise lights measure.
The Fuquay-Varina Police Department will start using the steady blue cruise lights between the hours of 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
“As a law enforcement agency, it is our duty to do everything we can to deter crime and if this proactive measure mitigates one incident, then we will call this measure a success,” said Police Chief Brandon Medina.
