Today, Governor Josh Stein expressed his disappointment following the announcement by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denying North Carolina's request to extend the 100 percent reimbursement period for disaster recovery by an additional 180 days. The decision concerns the recovery efforts in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Governor Stein, sharing his reaction, stated, "Today, I learned that FEMA refused our request to extend its 100% reimbursement period for another 180 days. I got this news while I was in Newland with families who lost their homes in the storm." He highlighted the severe need for continued recovery assistance in western North Carolina, emphasizing the ongoing challenges people face, such as debris removal, home rebuilding, and road restoration.

"I am extremely disappointed and urge the President to reconsider FEMA’s bad decision, even for 90 days," Stein continued. Drawing attention to the over six months of efforts post-disaster, he remarked, "Six months later, the people of western North Carolina are working hard to get back on their feet; they need FEMA to help them get the job done."

The Governor's statement underscores the continued challenges and the crucial need for federal support in the recovery process.
