The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Marine Fisheries is commencing the renewal process for commercial fishing, seafood dealer, and for-hire licenses and permits on April 15. The Division advises fishermen to complete this process in April or May to avoid long wait times that are often experienced closer to the June 30 expiration date.

“Those who renew in these months may find reduced wait times, as opposed to those who wait until late June,” the Division indicated. To circumvent delays, fishermen are encouraged to renew by mail, drop-box, or schedule an appointment, which will be prioritized over walk-ins.

Renewal packets are being mailed to individuals who previously renewed their licenses by mail. These packets contain an application and a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope. Participants who did not receive a packet can request one next year when renewing their license in person.

Individuals seeking additional information or wishing to schedule an appointment can contact their local license office by phone or email at License@deq.nc.gov. The office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Contact details for the offices are as follows: DMF Headquarters in Morehead City, Manteo Field Office, Pamlico District Office, and Southern District Office in Wilmington.

The expiration date for 2025 licenses and permits is June 30, with 2026 licenses becoming effective on July 1. This deadline does not apply to Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses, which expire based on the purchase date. Recreational fishing and hunting licenses can be renewed online or by contacting the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission.
