Duke Energy has allocated $500,000 in grants to assist recovery efforts in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. The funding will be distributed to 20 local nonprofits dedicated to long-term recovery projects such as home rebuilding, debris removal, and mental health services.
The Mountain Strong Yancey and Mitchell County Relief Team, a recipient, plans to use the funds to repair damaged access roads central to community infrastructure. Carol Tyler, the group’s president, highlighted the critical role this support plays in restoring vital connections for essential services.
GreenWorks, based in Asheville, assists property owners with flood debris removal. Eric Bradford, director of operations, acknowledged Duke Energy's contribution as essential for residents without the means to address their property damage independently.
Duke Energy remains committed to rebuilding infrastructure and fortifying grid reliability in the region six months after the hurricane. Kendal Bowman, president of Duke Energy North Carolina, expressed admiration for the resilience of the affected communities and reiterated the company's commitment to supporting recovery efforts.
