The proposed combination of Charlotte-based Atrium Health and Winston-Salem-based Wake Forest Baptist Health is under fire from State Treasurer Dale Folwell.

Folwell said hospital consolidations reduce health-care competition and are “bad for North Carolina.” Folwell made the comment at the monthly Local Government Commission meeting in Raleigh. Folwell called Winston-Salem a “very serious situation.”

In a statement, Atrium said there will be important benefits from the consolidation: “Our collective goal will be to continually advance access, affordability and quality of care throughout North Carolina and the surrounding region. Among the many benefits, this combination will enhance the patient-centered research and innovation taking place in the Triad and bring a state-of-the-art medical school to Charlotte.”

Atrium is expected to seek approval for $600 million bonds at the LGC January meeting. Folwell chairs the nine-member board. All state-backed debt issues require approval by the LGC.
