Governor Josh Stein addressed the issue of child abuse and neglect in North Carolina alongside Attorney General Jeff Jackson, NC Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie Buffaloe, NC Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai, and several advocates and law enforcement officers at the SAFEChild Advocacy Center. Their meeting aimed to highlight Child Abuse Prevention Month in April and Children's Advocacy Center Day on April 28.
Governor Stein noted, "Every year there are more than 100,000 reports of child abuse and neglect in North Carolina." He added that recognizing these observances helps "seek justice and promote healing for North Carolina’s children, as well as reaffirm our commitment to protecting kids from abuse."
Attorney General Jackson expressed his dedication to ensuring that child survivors can "heal, hold their abusers accountable, and build strong futures." He commended Governor Stein for his leadership in the effort.
North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie Buffaloe emphasized the necessity for children to report abuse, underscoring the importance of prevention strategies like online protection and reducing firearm-related threats.
Dev Sangvai, Secretary of the NC Health and Human Services, praised organizations like SAFEChild North Carolina for providing essential support to affected families. He emphasized, "Working together with partners across the state, we can raise awareness and protect children."
SAFEchild Executive Director Cristin DeRonja echoed these sentiments, highlighting the organization's crucial role in intervention and treatment of affected children. She affirmed the need for resources and expressed gratitude for the state’s efforts.
Governor Stein signed proclamations at the event, acknowledging the significant dates and efforts. As Attorney General, Stein was instrumental in passing the Sexual Assault Fast Reporting and Enforcement Act, ensuring mandatory reporting of abuse. His budget proposal for 2025-2027 includes funding for the Positive Parenting Program aimed at reducing child maltreatment.
Support is available for victims, and the public is encouraged to report suspected abuse.
