The Division of Coastal Management (DCM) within the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) is set to hold a second public hearing regarding the Mid-Currituck Bridge Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) application. The hearing will take place on April 16 from 5-7 p.m. at the Currituck Extension Center in Barco.

The upcoming session aims to gather public feedback on the application submitted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA). Their proposal includes the construction of the Mid-Currituck Bridge over the Currituck Sound, connecting Aydlett to areas south of Corolla, as well as improvements to existing roadways in Currituck and Dare Counties.

As mandated by GS 113A-119(b), NCDEQ announced in February 2025 that NCDOT's application was deemed complete on January 7, 2025. An initial public hearing concerning the same project was held in Dare County on March 18. For those interested in reviewing the application, it is accessible both at the DCM office in Morehead City and online.

Details for participation in the upcoming hearing have been outlined: it will be held in person, and speaker registration will begin at 4 p.m. on the day of the event at the venue. The public is also welcome to submit written comments or share them during the hearing. Should there be a large number of speakers, the hearing officer may impose time limits on individual remarks.

The period for submitting comments has been extended to April 30, 2025. All feedback can be sent to Tancred Miller, Director of the Division of Coastal Management, through traditional mail to the specified address or via email with “Mid-Currituck CAMA application” as the subject.

Every submitted comment will be considered before making the final decision on the permit, with a notification of the decision available upon request.
