Smoke from wildfires in Polk County has resulted in unhealthy air quality levels, prompting the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) to issue a Code Red alert for the area. This level indicates that prolonged exposure may be harmful to anyone, and residents are advised to limit outdoor exertion. Those sensitive to air pollution, including children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, should avoid outdoor activities.
Rutherford County is experiencing a Code Orange alert, indicating air quality that poses risks to sensitive groups. During these conditions, vulnerable individuals should reduce outdoor activities.
These alerts remain effective through midnight Saturday night. DAQ will continue monitoring conditions and may adjust or extend the alerts as necessary. The latest information can be accessed on the Air Quality Portal. DAQ meteorologists will release daily forecasts by 3 p.m.
Satellite images reveal significant smoke from the Fish Hook, Black Cove, and Deep Woods fires in Polk County. Elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have been detected, affecting visibility and potentially trapping pollutants due to a strong inversion forecasted overnight Friday into Saturday.
Fine particles like PM2.5 can penetrate deep into lungs, exacerbating asthma and other respiratory issues while also being linked to heart problems.
The DEQ website offers resources for protection against wildfire smoke.
Open burning of yard waste or land clearing debris is prohibited on Air Quality Action Days at Code Orange or higher levels per state law. Violations can be reported to the appropriate DAQ regional office. Additionally, a burn ban is in effect across North Carolina as issued by the N.C. Forest Service on Thursday.
