Governor Josh Stein and emergency officials in North Carolina are urging residents to prepare for severe weather expected on Wednesday. The state could experience severe storms, strong winds, potential flooding, and isolated tornadoes. Residents are advised to make preparations today.
"As our state from the mountains to the coast faces a severe storm, strong winds, and potential flooding late tonight and all day tomorrow, we urge all North Carolinians to stay tuned to their local weather forecast and stay safe," said Governor Josh Stein. "If a severe weather warning for isolated tornadoes is issued for your area, please have a plan to take immediate cover."
A Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) has been identified for parts of the mountains overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning due to possible damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall.
On Wednesday, storms ahead of a cold front will move into western North Carolina before sunrise and continue eastward. These storms may reach central North Carolina by late morning and eastern areas by early afternoon before moving offshore by evening. Wind gusts could exceed 70 mph in some areas. Much of central and eastern North Carolina is under an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather on Wednesday with the possibility of isolated tornadoes.
In addition to the threat of severe weather, dry conditions combined with gusty winds and low humidity increase wildfire risks today. Outdoor burning is discouraged.
Residents are encouraged to follow these preparedness tips:
- During severe weather, go inside a sturdy structure away from windows.
- Secure outdoor items that could become airborne.
- Ensure cell phones are charged with emergency alerts enabled.
- Have a plan ready if a severe weather warning is issued.
A watch indicates conditions may support severe weather; a warning means hazardous conditions are imminent.
