Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein participated in Read Across America Week by visiting elementary schools to promote literacy. The First Lady read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff at Brunson Elementary in Winston-Salem, her alma mater. Concurrently, Governor Stein visited Belville Elementary School in Brunswick County to mark National Read Across America Week and declare March as Reading Month in North Carolina.
During his visit, Governor Stein read "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak to a kindergarten class and interacted with students and teachers. He emphasized the importance of early literacy as a foundation for education: “Early literacy is a critical foundation for a strong education, and we must work to ensure every child leaves the early grades as a strong reader,” said Governor Josh Stein. “We must teach literacy through evidence-backed methods and help students experience the joy of reading. The First Lady and I were very happy to celebrate National Read Across America Week in schools across our state.”
Governor Stein is dedicated to ensuring that all students receive quality education regardless of their background. His commitment extends from pre-K through higher education, aiming to equip graduates with skills necessary for employment and contribution to North Carolina's growth.
