State coastal commission meets in New Bern this week

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) is set to convene on February 26 and 27 at the DoubleTree New Bern Riverfront, located at 100 Middle Street in New Bern. The public has the option to attend the meeting in person or watch it online.

The CRC's regular business meeting will commence at 3 p.m. on February 26 and continue at 9 a.m. on February 27. A public comment period is scheduled for noon on February 27, during which comments may be limited to three minutes per person at the chair's discretion. The Coastal Resources Advisory Council will meet exclusively in person on February 26 at 1 p.m., also at the DoubleTree location.

Details of the meetings are as follows:

- N.C. Coastal Resources Advisory Council: Regular Business Meeting, February 26 at 1 p.m., DoubleTree New Bern Riverfront.

- N.C. Coastal Resources Commission: Regular Business Meeting, February 26 at 3 p.m.; February 27 at 9 a.m., DoubleTree New Bern Riverfront.

A public comment period is set for noon on February 27, which will be in-person only.

Agenda items for discussion include consideration of variance requests such as Earnest's oceanfront setback in North Topsail Beach and sandbags for The Shoals Club on Bald Head Island. Additionally, there will be a public hearing regarding wheat straw bales used for sand fencing.

On February 27, topics include updates from closed sessions about CRC vs. RRC cases and objections from the Rules Review Commission related to permanent rule procedures. Other discussions will focus on major permits, recommendations for permanent rulemaking concerning ocean hazard areas, petitions for rulemaking procedures related to estuarine waters, litigation updates of interest to the commission, and nominations for the Coastal Resources Advisory Council.
