The North Carolina Courage announced on Monday that defenders Julia Dorsey and Landy Mertz will be waived. This decision comes ahead of the club's full end-of-season roster announcement scheduled for Tuesday.
Both players, selected in the 2024 draft, made their professional debuts during their rookie seasons. Mertz debuted with North Carolina, while Dorsey was on loan with Dallas Trinity FC in the USL Super League.
Dorsey was a third-round pick from the University of North Carolina, where she excelled as a two-sport athlete. Her senior soccer season was cut short due to an injury sustained playing lacrosse in the previous spring. She joined Dallas Trinity FC on loan in August and participated regularly during the fall portion of their inaugural season.
Mertz, a fourth-round selection from Pittsburgh and a two-time All-ACC performer, made her first professional appearance on May 24 against Houston Dash. She scored her debut goal on July 31 against Monterrey during the 2024 NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup group stage, aiding Courage's progression to the semifinals.
With these waivers and after the start of the end-of-season waiver wire period, North Carolina Courage will have 23 active players along with one player loaned out and another listed as injured.
