WakeMed Soccer Park | North Carolina Courage
The North Carolina Courage secured a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC on Saturday night at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Olivia Wingate scored the equalizer in the final moments of the match, witnessed by 7,037 spectators. Despite the result, North Carolina was eliminated from top-four contention and will play an NWSL Quarterfinal on the road as the five-seed.
The match featured two distinct halves. The Courage dominated the first half with seven out of eight shots and maintained 60% possession but failed to score before halftime. In contrast, Angel City increased their efforts in the second half, managing four of five shots on target as both teams ended with six total shots and more balanced possession.
Goalkeeper Casey Murphy played a crucial role for North Carolina during much of the second half by stopping three shots and effectively reading plays to counter Angel City's attacks. However, substitute Christen Press broke through in added time with a goal that seemed to secure victory for Angel City.
North Carolina responded swiftly. Denise O’Sullivan provided a key assist to Wingate, who capitalized on her speed to bypass defenders and score, ensuring North Carolina's home unbeaten streak extended to 21 matches since April 2023.
The Courage aim to tie the NWSL record for home unbeaten streaks in their upcoming home finale against Washington on November 2. Notably, Washington was the last team to defeat them at WakeMed Soccer Park.
North Carolina has shown resilience this season by earning 11 points from losing positions, trailing only Kansas City Current and Washington Spirit. They also lead the league with ten goals scored by substitutes.
Next, North Carolina will travel to face Bay FC on October 19 at 10 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcasted on ION.
