Casey Murphy, a standout goalkeeper in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), has shown remarkable performance following her participation in the 2024 Olympics. Known for her skills on both national and international stages since joining the league in 2019, Murphy leads the NWSL in prevented goals per 90 minutes this year.

Since returning with a Gold Medal from the Paris Olympics, Murphy's statistics have been impressive. Before the Games, she had an expected goals against of 19.02, conceding just 17 goals with a save percentage of 73.85%. In nine matches after returning, her expected goals against was 17.31, yet she conceded only ten goals with a save percentage of 75.61%.

Reflecting on her Olympic experience, Murphy said, “The summer was exciting. It was my first Olympics, and I feel like I took a lot away from that experience." She expressed eagerness to finish the season strong as they enter postseason play.

Nathan Thackeray, Courage's goalkeeper coach, attributes Murphy’s success to her consistency throughout the season. “She’s been extremely consistent... The biggest thing for Casey... is how consistent she is," Thackeray stated.

Murphy's consistency is supported by a stable backline that has remained largely unchanged over two seasons. This stability contributes to one of the best defenses in the league and creates a competitive training environment.

Thackeray emphasized that their understanding of each other's traits strengthens their defense: "You look at the top teams... very rarely do the center backs and goalkeeper change."

Murphy’s willingness to learn new concepts also plays a role in her high-level performance. Thackeray noted improvements in both possession and defensive actions: "There’s been a lot of growth... but the willingness to implement certain things into her game has been the biggest growth area."

While Murphy was at the Olympics, Marisa Bova excelled as Courage's goalkeeper during multiple Summer Cup games. Thackeray believes this intra-group competition benefits development: “The group is so important for daily environment and individual development."

Despite friendly competition within the team, Murphy remains focused on self-improvement: “I only compete against myself... making sure that I’m getting a little bit better each day.”

As playoffs approach where every game counts significantly more than before due to its win-or-go-home nature; having an exceptional goalkeeper like Casey can be crucial during these moments.
