The North Carolina Courage secured a playoff spot with a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Wave on Saturday night. The match, held at WakeMed Soccer Park, saw significant contributions from young players Aline Gomes and Manaka Matsukubo.

Aline Gomes, 19, scored her first NWSL goal in the 32nd minute. The Brazilian forward joined the Courage during the midseason transfer window from Ferroviária and has shown promise in her initial appearances. Her goal against San Diego was a result of strategic positioning and execution.

Manaka Matsukubo, 20, increased the Courage's lead in stoppage time with a close-range header. This match marked her return to the team after helping Japan secure a silver medal at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. During the tournament, she was recognized for her outstanding performance by receiving three Player of the Match awards and winning the Silver Ball.

Head Coach Sean Nahas commented on their performances: “Manaka had an unbelievable U-20 World Cup and Aline is still trying to find her stride here in the league.”

Riley Jackson also played a role as a second-half substitute, contributing to maintaining control late in the game. Jackson recently represented the U.S. at the U-20 World Cup.

With Kerolin Nicoli back from injury and Ashley Sanchez showing strong form, this match provided insight into both current capabilities and future potential for one of NWSL’s most successful teams.
