On April 29, 2025, state and local emergency management officials will gather with Duke Energy representatives to conduct a simulation exercise at the Harris Nuclear Plant, located in Wake County, NC. This exercise will evaluate the emergency response plans within a 10-mile radius of the nuclear plant, emphasizing command, control, communications, and response at the state, county, and utility partner levels.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) require such simulation exercises every two years to test response plans within a 10-mile radius of a nuclear power plant. Additionally, every eight years, state and local officials must perform simulation exercises for response plans within a 50-mile radius of a nuclear plant. These exercises include considerations for agricultural interests, food supply, and plans for reentry following an evacuation.

The public and media are invited to attend the exercise results meeting, which will be conducted by FEMA evaluators on May 1, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the following location:

New Hill Community Center

3101 New Hill-Holleman Rd

New Hill, NC 27562
