Opsun Corporation, a company specializing in structures for solar panels, plans to invest $9.3 million for a new production facility in High Point, North Carolina. This investment marks the Canadian company’s first foray into the U.S. market and is set to create 20 new jobs in Guilford County.
Governor Josh Stein hailed the development, stating, "This announcement is yet another illustration of how much companies want to do business in North Carolina." He emphasized the state's commitment to sustainability and its strategic location. The move aligns with North Carolina’s clean energy objectives and its appeal to global manufacturers.
Opsun, headquartered in Quebec City, designs aluminum solar panel mounting structures suitable for various markets. The new facility will serve as the company's third manufacturing site, enhancing efficiency and storage capacity while significantly expanding its operations.
François Gilles-Gagnon, President of Opsun, highlighted the significance of the U.S. expansion: “This new facility will be a key to Opsun’s growth in the USA.” He added that Opsun sources components from North America, reinforcing its dedication to domestically-made products.
Lee Lilley, N.C. Commerce Secretary, commented on the strategic advantages of the state’s location and workforce: “As the fourth-largest state for installed solar energy capacity, Opsun is a great addition to North Carolina’s clean energy supply chain.” The new positions at Opsun offer an average salary exceeding the county's current average, potentially increasing the local payroll impact by over $1.2 million annually.
The expansion will also benefit from a $40,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund, contingent on job creation and investment targets. This fund assists local governments in attracting economic development.
N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger praised the decision: “These new jobs are a great addition to Guilford County and the entire state of North Carolina.” He noted the region’s strong manufacturing workforce and the opportunities it presents for Opsun's future success.
Key partners in the project include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and other local government and educational organizations. The collaborative effort underscores the state's dedication to fostering a robust clean energy sector.
