The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and Positive Childhood Alliance North Carolina (PCANC) will host a public event as Governor Josh Stein declares April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the state. The event aims to emphasize the collective responsibility of community organizations, government agencies, businesses, faith groups, and other stakeholders in supporting children to reach their full potential.
A family-friendly gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1st at Pullen Park in Raleigh from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring free food and entertainment while supplies last. The theme for the 2025 national campaign is "Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention," underscoring the need for collaboration to foster a better future.
NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Dev Sangvai stated, "Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment with hope for the future." He added that providing families with resources and support before challenges escalate can help build a stronger state where all children can thrive.
PCANC President and CEO Sharon Hirsch highlighted funding disparities in child welfare: "For every $10 spent on child welfare in the U.S., only $1.50 goes toward prevention—we can and must do better." She advocated for investments in family resource centers to prevent crises before they occur.
During Child Abuse Prevention Month, PCANC and NCDHHS are participating in national efforts to reshape discussions around preventing child maltreatment and increasing investment in supportive programs. The public is encouraged to participate by attending events such as the Pinwheel Planting on April 1st at Pullen Park or engaging in Wear Blue Day on April 4th.
Further actions include joining digital advocacy efforts on April 9th to push for increased federal funding for community-based child abuse prevention grants. More information on participation opportunities can be found at PositiveChildhoodAllianceNC.org.
