South Carolina agencies and nonprofits can now apply for grants of up to $20,000 to enhance their disaster preparedness efforts. The Duke Energy Foundation has allocated $500,000 through its 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program to aid in severe weather emergency preparedness across the state.

The initiative comes in response to the impact of Hurricane Helene on South Carolina, which was described as "historic, widespread and deadly." The hurricane prompted communities and first responders to reconsider their strategies for future severe weather events. Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president, stated that the HERO grants aim "to help fill gaps identified when responding to historic storms like Helene."

Eligible projects include equipment upgrades, communication tools, specialized training, planning initiatives, storm shelters and activities benefiting low-income communities. Applications are open until April 25.

This marks the fourth year of the microgrant program by Duke Energy Foundation, bringing total support to $2 million since its inception. Since 2022, the program has funded 99 microgrants supporting local agencies and nonprofits across South Carolina.

Local leaders have shared positive feedback about previous grants. Jim Baber from Hodges-Cokesbury Fire Department noted how a utility vehicle purchased with grant funds was crucial during Hurricane Helene. Mac McMakin from Travelers Rest Fire Department highlighted improvements in protective gear for responders due to last year's grant. Joshua Hawkins from Anderson County Sheriff’s Office appreciated radio equipment acquired through a previous grant that helped coordinate response activities post-Hurricane Helene.

Duke Energy Foundation annually provides over $30 million in philanthropic support within communities served by Duke Energy customers. Funded by Duke Energy shareholders, it is part of one of America’s largest energy holding companies headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., serving millions across several states.
