Today, Governor Josh Stein and emergency management officials encouraged residents in western North Carolina to apply for assistance to repair privately owned roads and bridges. The unique topography of the region was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene, damaging over 8,000 private roads and bridges. This program aims to assist property owners in restoring access for emergency services, school buses, and other transportation means.

"Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to more than 8,000 private roads and bridges, which often serve as the only access route for many ambulances, fire trucks, mail delivery vehicles, school buses, and residents traveling to school or work," said Governor Josh Stein. "If not repaired, these critical private roads and bridges pose a significant public safety risk; for example, hindering home repair efforts. If you need to repair your bridges or roads, I encourage you to apply for assistance by visiting the program's portal."

Following Hurricane Helene's impact on North Carolina, numerous private roads, culverts, pipes, and bridges were damaged or destroyed. On January 2nd of this year, the Governor issued Executive Order #2 directing the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management (NCEM) to administer state assistance programs aimed at repairing private roads and bridges. The North Carolina Private Road and Bridge Program (NC-PRB) was established specifically for this purpose.

To address these issues effectively, Governor Stein tasked NCEM with managing state assistance programs focused on repairing private infrastructure. State authorities are collaborating closely with the legislature to secure additional funding. NCEM is working on hiring external service providers to facilitate these repairs efficiently. To expedite this process further, NCEM has created an interest form that property owners can fill out to express their interest in participating in this program.

Disaster-affected individuals are also encouraged to contact the Disaster Case Management Service staff in North Carolina if they require additional resources or support in their recovery efforts.
