Red Hat has announced a global collaboration with Fujitsu to deliver a virtualized radio access network (vRAN) solution on Red Hat OpenShift. This collaboration aims to drive the next generation of RAN innovation by using Red Hat OpenShift as the preferred hybrid cloud platform for Fujitsu's AI-ready vRAN solution. The announcement was made at MWC Barcelona.

Fujitsu's selection of Red Hat OpenShift will support their O-RAN O-Cloud based solution, which is designed to enhance efficiency and optimize networks while expanding operations across various applications. The platform supports virtualized and containerized open RAN functions and artificial intelligence workloads for RAN, providing advanced automation, flexibility, and security capabilities.

The use of Red Hat OpenShift offers several benefits for service providers, including advanced orchestration and automation through zero-touch provisioning and built-in automation. It also provides ultra-low latency and improved performance by running on ARM servers, offering power-efficient alternatives for achieving lower latency and enhanced network performance.

Additionally, the AI-ready vRAN capabilities enable service providers to scale with enhanced security features while managing virtualized, cloud-native, and AI-enabled applications on a unified platform. Utilizing Red Hat OpenShift can lead to up to a 40% reduction in total cost of ownership due to improved resource sharing, productivity, and automation implementation.

Honoré LaBourdette from Red Hat stated: "The future of RAN is AI, and it is powered by cloud-native technologies. With this collaboration, Red Hat and Fujitsu are helping service providers realize the full potential of RAN."

Masaki Taniguchi from Fujitsu expressed satisfaction in extending their collaboration with Red Hat: "Red Hat OpenShift offers an open, highly scalable cloud-native platform to deliver critical flexibility and integration for RAN."

This partnership aligns with open compute standards set by the O-RAN Alliance for RAN and O-Cloud architecture.
