Red Hat, KDDI, and Samsung have joined forces to enhance Open RAN operations using Red Hat OpenShift and Samsung's virtualized RAN (vRAN) solutions. This collaboration aims to reduce deployment and provisioning time while allowing continuous software upgrades.

The announcement was made at MWC Barcelona on March 3, 2025. Red Hat, a leading provider of open source solutions, has partnered with Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI to create an open radio access network (Open RAN) utilizing Red Hat OpenShift. The goal is to streamline operations by offering a faster method for installing and upgrading Open RAN software, thus minimizing service downtime during maintenance.

KDDI plans to leverage Red Hat OpenShift's cloud-native capabilities to improve Open RAN functionality across its mobile network services. This will enable service providers to transform their networks with a horizontal cloud platform that can span the entire network while supporting multiple functions and vendors. As part of this effort, Red Hat is working alongside KDDI and Samsung to enhance network flexibility and stability through Samsung's software-based network solutions.

Kazuhiro Furuhata from KDDI expressed satisfaction with the extended collaboration: “KDDI is pleased to further extend our collaboration with Red Hat for Open RAN deployment that can support future innovation.”

Honoré LaBourdette from Red Hat commented on the joint initiative: “With this collaboration, Red Hat, KDDI and Samsung continue to build upon our shared vision to accelerate 5G core and RAN workloads across any network landscape.”

Samsung's Ilseung Ban also highlighted the partnership’s impact: “For years, Samsung has been fostering a robust ecosystem with industry-leading partners... We look forward to continuing our collaboration with KDDI and Red Hat.”

This strategic alliance underscores the commitment of all parties involved in advancing next-generation network capabilities through innovative solutions.
