Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina addressed the public this morning regarding the winter storm affecting much of the state. He emphasized caution and urged residents to heed local officials' advice as they prepare for snow, ice, and cold weather conditions.
“Our State Emergency Response Team is using every tool at its disposal to minimize the impact of this storm on North Carolinians,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Over the next 24 hours, think about who in your life might be most vulnerable to this weather; please check on them and make sure they’re prepared, too. Taking care of each other is what North Carolinians do.”
A State of Emergency was declared by Governor Stein in anticipation of the storm. The State Emergency Response Team remains active, coordinating with local emergency management officials through the State Emergency Operations Center and Regional Coordination Centers to ensure a swift response.
The forecast predicts snowfall accumulations ranging from 1 to 2 inches across most areas, with northern counties expecting up to 4 inches. Northeastern counties could see between 6 to 8 inches. Cold temperatures and gusty winds are expected tonight, with wind chill values dropping into the teens.
Central and eastern parts of North Carolina may experience significant ice accumulation, potentially causing power outages due to falling tree limbs. Residents are advised to stay informed as conditions evolve.
The North Carolina National Guard has mobilized over 180 guardsmen for community support statewide.
Travel conditions are hazardous according to N.C. Department of Transportation officials who advise against unnecessary travel. Crews have pre-treated roads with brine and have salt reserves ready for use post-storm.

North Carolina Emergency Management recommends several preparedness steps: monitoring forecasts closely, stocking up on essentials like water and non-perishable food, keeping devices charged, staying off roads when possible, having an emergency kit in vehicles if travel is necessary, dressing warmly in layers when outside, preparing pet supplies for emergencies, checking on vulnerable neighbors or friends during harsh weather conditions, safely operating generators outdoors only during power outages while avoiding indoor charcoal burning or gas grilling.
