TOWN OF HOLLY SPRINGS: Design Starting on New Fire Station 3

Firestation

Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on Apr. 6.

Plans for a new fire station in northwest Holly Springs moved forward April 5 as the Town Council approved an architectural contract for replacing Station 3.

The new station will be built on Woods Creek Road, putting it closer to the 12 Oaks community, the Carolina Springs development, and a Wake County elementary school under construction. The one-story station will have two truck bays with the option for an additional bay. The site will be between 4 and 8 acres.

The current station is in a former house on the 4100 block of Friendship Road. The Town began leasing the property in 2008 on an interim basis until a new station could be built.

Station design and permitting will take place over the next year. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2023 and take about a year. The station will have living quarters, a decontamination room, kitchen and eating area. It will also have space where police officers in the vicinity can catch up on paperwork rather than driving all the way to headquarters.

Public Engagement on Holly Springs Road Widening

Council members were briefed on the communications strategy for construction between Flint Point Lane and Sunset Lake Road. Work is scheduled to start April 20 and will take up to three years. Widening to a consistent four lanes will accommodate additional traffic expected from the NC 540 interchange being built.

The project webpage links to an interactive map where residents can learn about current and upcoming construction phases. They can leave feedback and questions for engineers.

Work will start near the crossing over Middle Creek, which will be replaced with a longer, higher, four-lane bridge since the existing roadway is prone to flooding. The project includes safe pedestrian and bicycle routes and crossings near the schools.

Last week at Holly Ridge Middle School, approximately 100 people attended an open house that the Town held. After a presentation, residents had an opportunity to study maps and speak with engineers and the contractor. More presentations and other engagement are expected with neighborhood associations, school staff, and other groups.

Updating the Town’s Strategic Plan

The Town Council approved updates to the Strategic Plan, which is adopted each year before the recommended budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The new budget year starts July 1.

Plan changes included a full update to the Engaged, Healthy and Active Community priority area. Also, there are new initiatives for the downtown area, employee recruitment, infrastructure planning and police and fire professional accreditation.
