North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles implemented new policy changes that waive road tests for new drivers and will increase license renewal and registration fees by 8%.

The new policies and fees went into effect in July, The Center Square reported on July 22, and included price increases between 25 cents and $7.75.

State law requires motor vehicle fees to account for inflation with a standard driver's license, which is issued every five to eight years, resulting in an annual increase of 50 cents, The Center Square reported. The cost for a five-year license is currently $27.50, an eight-year ID is $44 and learner's permits and commercial driver's licenses have increased to $21.50 with an application fee also being charged.

Vehicle registration fees in the state increased to $38.75 and fees for commercial, motorcycles, rental cars, house trailers, low-speed and electric vehicle registrations have also increased, The Center Square reported.
