North Carolina Republican state senators apparently are growing impatient with the lack of a budget from the governor.
It has been two weeks since the fiscal year started and Republican senators want to know about Gov Roy Cooper’s 2020 2021 budget request.
"Leadership is easy when the state is flush," Sen. Harry Brown (R-Onslow) said in a news release published on Senate President Phil Berger's (R-Rockingham) Medium press website in early July. "But this year, when times got tough, Gov. Cooper was nowhere to be found. Where is his budget request? His failure to submit one is an abdication of responsibility during a crisis."
Senate Republicans claimed in the press release the state is facing a $5 billion budget deficit because of COVID-19 and they want to know what Cooper is going to do about the shortfall.
"During the last recession, North Carolinians paid some of the highest taxes in the southeast and Democrats still had to gut core services like education," Sen. Kathy Harrington (R-Gaston) said. "Perhaps that’s why Gov. Cooper decided not to bother with a budget proposal this year."
