Town of Holly Springs issued the following announcement on Apr. 22.
Holly Springs Road Widening to Include Pedestrian Improvements
Holly Springs Road widening continues to move forward as the Holly Springs Town Council approved funding for additional design work for potential pedestrian improvements near school campuses, bridge environmental work and other items at the April 21 virtual council meeting.
As part of the 2018 Transportation Bond, this project will widen Holly Springs Road from Flint Point Lane to Sunset Lake Road from a two-lane road to a four-lane road. This project will increase road capacity, improve safety and upgrade the bridge over Middle Creek to decrease the chance of roadway flooding during heavy rain events.
Feedback received from Holly Springs residents during public forums and Wake County Public School System staff helped identify the desire for pedestrian enhancements.
Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-2021.
Also at the meeting, the council approved funding to resurface 1.93 miles of streets. A street condition rating survey and other factors prioritize streets for rehabilitation. Funding comes from annual state-shared gas tax revenues.
The council approved a $15,000 challenge grant contribution to the Holly Springs Chamber Foundation for COVID-19 related economic recovery for small businesses in Holly Springs. The council also awarded grants to local civic nonprofit groups. The Holly Springs Food Cupboard was awarded $2,500. Holly Springs Community Band and Holly Springs High School Band were awarded $2,000. Holly Springs High School PTSA and Holly Springs Kiwanis Club received $1,500. Fuquay Varina Food Shelf, InterAct, LaunchHOLLYSPRINGS, South Wake Conservationists and Western Wake Crisis Ministry were awarded $1,000. Holly Springs Civitan received $500.
Also at the meeting, the council:
Amended the Town Council calendar due to revenue and economic uncertainties resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The recommended budget presentation now is scheduled for May 26 with the public hearing on June 2. The budget workshop is scheduled for June 4 with budget adoption scheduled for June 16.
Approved a grave relocation from 601 Holly Springs Road to Holly Springs Cemetery. The grave site is likely the family plot of Henry Saunders Edwards, who owned the property from 1860 to 1891.
