Toyota Mississippi’s Experience Center has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the LEED Platinum certification, marking it as one of five facilities in Mississippi to earn this distinction from the Green Building Council. Opened in June 2022, the 15,000-square-foot center is designed to embody Toyota’s environmental principles through its focus on carbon reduction, water conservation, biodiversity enhancement, and promoting a circular economy.
Sean McCarthy, Toyota Mississippi engineering manager, emphasized the center’s role as an example for sustainable building practices: “The Mississippi Experience Center is a blend of innovation coupled with Toyota’s fundamental environmental philosophy to make a better planet,” he said. He added that they are proud of the facility being among the few in the state at this level.
In terms of carbon management, the facility features a solar farm generating over 7,000 kilowatt hours monthly. The design also optimizes natural light use to cut down on artificial lighting needs by half. Water conservation efforts include a system that collects rainwater for non-potable uses such as flushing toilets.
The site also supports local biodiversity through a bio-retention pond that acts as a natural filtration system and habitat for species like the Northern Bobwhite quail and Wood duck. Additionally, Toyota’s commitment to a circular economy is evident in their use of reclaimed materials and waste minimization during construction.
Toyota continues its commitment to sustainability and invites the public to visit the Experience Center through tours available at www.TourToyota.com/MS. This initiative aligns with Toyota’s broader mission of advancing sustainable mobility solutions across its operations.
