The N.C. Forest Service Incident Management Team has prioritized public and firefighter safety as they continue to manage the Sunset Road Fire in Brunswick County. Motorists are advised to be cautious, as wildland fire engines and large equipment remain active on roads in the area.
As of Tuesday, the fire covers 1,331 acres with 15% containment. A recent drone flight over the northern section revealed more heat signatures than expected, maintaining current containment levels. The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation.
Firefighting resources include six tractor plow units, ten Type 6 engines, a full track unit, and six UTVs equipped for fire suppression. Assistance with water handling is provided by Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department and other local cooperators such as Brunswick County Emergency Management and various local fire departments.
The fire started on May 2 in Boiling Spring Lakes but has not destroyed any homes. Containment percentage reflects areas where the fire line poses no risk of escape without further action.
Weather forecasts predict moisture returning throughout the week due to a stalled front. Wind gusts are expected to increase today with potential scattered showers and thunderstorms starting Wednesday night. The fire continues to smolder with visible smoke in its vicinity.
A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is enforced up to 3,000 feet until further notice. Flying drones within this area is illegal as it endangers pilots and hinders firefighting efforts. The public is reminded to keep drones away from wildfires.
