Today marked a step forward in containing the wildfires affecting Polk and Henderson counties. The Black Cove Complex, comprising the Black Cove, Deep Woods, and Fish Hook fires, expanded over 7,672 acres, with each fire varying in containment level. Specifically, the Black Cove is 36% contained, Deep Woods 32%, and Fish Hook is fully contained.

The Black Cove fire was ignited by a power line, and the cause of the Deep Woods fire remains under investigation. The Fish Hook fire, similar to Black Cove, was also caused by a power line.

Despite high humidity and low wind, which limited fire activity, extinguishing efforts persist, focusing on vigilance, clearance of debris, and restoration activities. These operations are crucial for the steep terrains affected by the fires to prevent sediment from affecting nearby waterways. The evening update is the final one concerning the Black Cove Complex, but morning updates will still be available.

Evacuation alerts are under constant reassessment. Residents of Polk and Henderson counties should check their respective county websites for updates. A Temporary Flight Restriction is imposed up to 5,500 feet to aid firefighting aircraft, warning against the use of drones that could interfere with operations.

Governor Josh Stein announced a State of Emergency on March 26. A statewide ban on open burning was put in place effective March 21, with all associated permits revoked and no new ones issued.
