Town of Garner issued the following announcement on Dec. 2.
The Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), has received a grant to provide increased access to youth sports and play spaces in local parks for all.
Garner was one of only 16 communities in the nation to receive a Youth Sports and Play Grant in 2021. Garner PRCR intends to use the funds to purchase and brand its new Rec & Roll van, a mobile recreation vehicle that will make visits to Town parks and bring free pop-up programming available to everyone. Staff will be working with local youth over the next few months to develop ideas for graphic design elements to include on the van’s exterior.
“All children deserve a fun, safe place to play where they feel like they belong,” said Megan Young, Garner PRCR’s recreation superintendent and project manager for the grant. “When children play sports, they grow up healthier, feel good about themselves, thrive in school and are more likely to succeed in their future careers. Children who are enrolled in park and recreation-sponsored youth sports will be set up for success.”
The Walt Disney Company, in collaboration with NRPA, provided the grant to support the Rec & Roll initiative. The investment supports NRPA’s and Disney’s combined goal to increase equitable access to play opportunities, including youth sports, and to encourage children and families to enjoy their local parks to improve overall health and well-being.
