A new report from a financial company ranked North Carolina first when it comes to equitable funding to education.
The WalletHub report released on Aug. 5 means that North Carolina is tops in the nation at distributing funding between its school districts.
Rounding out the report's Top 5 were Indiana, Arkansas, Florida, and Iowa. The report looked at 49 of the 50 states. Hawaii was not included, WalletHub said, because of "data limitations."
WalletHub said that equitable school district funding can "help prevent poor students from having lower graduation rates, lower rates of pursuing higher education and smaller future incomes than their wealthy peers."
The study is also significant at this time given that many districts are using some degree of remote learning due to COVID-19. WalletHub notes that less equitable funding may likely mean that low-income students will experience the greatest loss of learning because those families likely don't have the financial means to acquire the necessary technological resources.
