During economic downturns, donations large and small tend to dry up at the time when financial support initiatives are most in need.
The COVID-19 economic impact is no different. Charities in North Carolina and across the nation are in need of financial support, and some companies and donors are providing that assistance.
Coastal Federal Credit Union recently awarded $5,000 grants to several charities, including Overflowing Hands of Raleigh and The Green Chair Project.
"Every penny that we raise goes for food," Overflowing Hands of Raleigh founder Chandler Ellis told ABC 11. "And we've raised right around $50,000 now."
The Green Chair Project has changed its focus during the COVID-19 crisis from providing furniture to needy families to providing beds to children in Wake County.
"Especially during this crisis those kids need that bed so badly because they're homebound," Jackie Craig, one of the founders of The Green Chair Project, told ABC 11. "And that bed helps them stay healthy, gives them the sleep they need and a space of their own."
