North Carolina Emergency Management, in partnership with Warren County Emergency Management, has opened a State Operated Shelter in Warrenton to assist residents evacuating due to Hurricane Erin. The shelter, which is pet friendly, began operating at 8 a.m. on August 19 at 113 Wilcox St, Warrenton, NC.

Officials advise evacuees to bring essential items such as medications, important documents, and emergency kits. Those bringing pets are reminded to pack necessary supplies for them as well.

Guidelines for evacuation include listening to local media updates, filling vehicles with gasoline, and taking only one vehicle per family to help reduce traffic congestion. Residents are encouraged to leave early to avoid being caught by severe weather and to plan their destination ahead of time. Informing family or friends about evacuation plans is recommended.

Authorities suggest that if possible, evacuees should stay with family or friends in safe areas first, then consider hotels or motels before using public shelters as a last resort. Shelters are intended for safety rather than comfort.

Evacuees are also advised to use major roads or routes recommended by local officials when leaving the area. Pets should always be taken along during evacuations.

Other recommendations include bringing emergency kits for both families and pets, carrying extra cash due to potential bank closures or ATM outages, securing homes by locking doors and windows and unplugging small appliances, turning off utilities where possible, and checking if neighbors need assistance with transportation.

Updates from the State Emergency Response Team and information on preparedness can be found online. For current road conditions during the evacuation period, residents are encouraged to check official resources.
