It is expected that around 45 million Americans will travel domestically this Memorial Day weekend, with 87% of them opting for road travel, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). The State Highway Patrol is working to ensure that residents and visitors in our state reach their destinations safely.
As Memorial Day unofficially marks the beginning of summer, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will use both educational information and law enforcement measures to reduce vehicle collisions caused mainly by speeding, distracted driving, and/or driving under the influence. They also aim to lessen collision severity through enforcing passenger restraint laws.
Memorial Day also signals the start of the “100 Deadliest Days” for teenage drivers. Historically, there is an increase in mortality rates among teenage drivers during summer months. Both parents and teenagers are encouraged to strictly adhere to North Carolina’s requirements for high school graduate teen drivers. More information about these requirements can be found on the Division of Motor Vehicles website.
Additionally, the State Highway Patrol partners with NC Governor’s Highway Safety Program Click It or Ticket campaign. This initiative includes two seven-day periods of vehicular law enforcement: May 19-25 and May 26-June 1, 2025. The campaign emphasizes consequences for violations related to seat belt use and child restraint laws.
Motorists can report dangerous driving behaviors observed on roads by calling *HP (*47) on their phones.
