An estimated 45 million Americans are expected to travel domestically this Memorial Day weekend, with 87% opting for road trips, according to AAA. The State Highway Patrol is taking steps to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors during this busy period.
As Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will focus on educational and enforcement efforts. These efforts aim to reduce collisions caused by speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving. Additionally, they seek to lessen the severity of accidents through strict enforcement of restraint laws.
The holiday also signals the beginning of what is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. Historically, these summer months see a rise in teen driving fatalities. Parents and teens are urged to follow North Carolina’s graduated driving requirements closely.
Furthermore, the State Highway Patrol is collaborating with the NC Governor’s Highway Safety Program on their Click It or Ticket campaign. This initiative includes two seven-day enforcement periods: May 19-25 and May 26-June 1. The campaign focuses on seat belt and child restraint violations.
Motorists can report dangerous driving behaviors by contacting the State Highway Patrol at *HP (*47).
