The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries announced on March 19 that the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will host its Lines of Communication meetings in North Carolina next week.

The initiative aims to strengthen relationships between fisheries stakeholders and council representatives, providing a platform for sharing information and perspectives. The meetings are designed to allow fishermen and other participants to engage directly with local council members, staff, and fellow fishery stakeholders along the South Atlantic coast.

Four in-person meetings are scheduled across North Carolina: Bolivia on March 23 at the Sandifer Administration Building; Morehead City on March 24 at the NC Division of Marine Fisheries Central District Office; Hatteras on March 25 at the Hatteras Civic Center; and Manteo on March 26 at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center. Each meeting will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils in the United States responsible for managing fisheries in federal waters. Its jurisdiction covers areas from three to two hundred miles off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and east Florida. The council manages several species including dolphin, wahoo, mackerels, snapper, and grouper.

The Division encourages anyone interested in federally managed species to attend one of these upcoming meetings. For more information or questions about participation, contact Christina Curtis at Christina.Wiegand@safmc.net or call 843-302-8437.
