On June 4, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) will collaborate with the Scotland County Memorial Library for its annual Laurinburg Community Day. This event is part of the third annual Week of Action by NC S.A.F.E., a statewide initiative focused on promoting safe firearm storage.

The event, scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. ET at the Scotland County Memorial Library in Laurinburg, NC, will feature the distribution of free gun locks and informational materials to community members. Various community partners are expected to participate.

NC S.A.F.E., launched by NCDPS, aims to address the rising number of deaths among children and youths due to firearm injuries and an increase in firearm thefts. The initiative emphasizes that proper firearm storage can prevent these incidents.

“Firearms are now the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina,” states NC S.A.F.E. The organization highlights that simple actions like locking firearms can enhance community safety and prevent tragedies.

Media representatives interested in covering the event or seeking interviews can access a full media kit provided by NC S.A.F.E., which includes prerecorded video responses, key facts, statistics, and other resources.

NC S.A.F.E. stresses that safely securing firearms is crucial for reducing gun thefts, suicide attempts, and youth violence. The program offers resources on best practices for firearm storage but does not engage in advocacy related to gun laws or regulations.
