State Veterinarian Mike Martin has approved the entry of Santa Claus and his reindeer into North Carolina for Christmas Eve. The announcement confirms that all of Santa’s reindeer, including Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph, will be allowed in the state.
Reindeer are members of the cervid family, which also includes deer, elk, moose and caribou. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services oversees the movement of captive cervids into the state.
“Santa’s reindeer are magical and pose no health threat to our native deer,” said Martin. “We look forward to welcoming them to North Carolina during Santa’s trek around the world.”
The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is responsible for regulating agriculture within North Carolina. Its work includes crop inspection, food safety testing and managing farmers markets throughout the state. The agency operates with more than 2,000 employees across 20 divisions under an elected commissioner. It also aims to enhance agriculture and protect consumers while safeguarding natural resources for residents’ benefit. More information about its services can be found on its official website.
The department manages operations at state fairs and research stations as well as influencing agricultural legislation at both state and federal levels. Established under the North Carolina State Constitution, it serves all regions of the state.
