The Rotary Club of Durham is set to host two events as part of its 2025 Flags for Heroes Project, marking the second year of this initiative. The project will honor local heroes by raising 500 flags at the Field of Honor located at Hub RTP in Research Triangle Park on May 18. A subsequent ceremony is scheduled for Flag Day, June 14, to recognize local leaders and corporate sponsors.

Following a successful inaugural effort last year that resulted in over $15,000 being donated to local veteran and youth programs, volunteers aim to exceed this amount in 2025. “We have a very ambitious goal of doubling the amount of money raised last year,” stated Rotary Club of Durham President-Elect Sara Stephens. “The response we have already seen from the Durham corporate community has been overwhelming, and now the public can join in by honoring its heroes.”

The flag-raising event on May 18 will take place at 300 Park Offices Drive on the Hub RTP campus at 5:00 p.m. The event aims to celebrate sponsors and volunteers with activities including a performance by the Southwest Elementary School Choir, a visit from the Durham Fire Department’s ladder truck, music by a live DJ, and sponsors planting the first flags as volunteers collectively raise 500 flags.
