Research Triangle Park (RTP) is undergoing significant transformation as it adapts to the needs of modern industries and workers. In 2025, several major companies marked important anniversaries and investments in the Park. IBM celebrated its 60th year at RTP, Biogen marked 30 years with a $2 billion investment commitment, and Lenovo observed two decades since establishing its North American headquarters in the area. Novartis Gene Therapies also announced a $771 million expansion that is expected to add 700 jobs in biologics and small molecule manufacturing.
Nearly 400 companies employ about 55,000 people at RTP, contributing an estimated $25.1 billion annually to the economy of North Carolina. The Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina oversees development and guides growth through partnerships and initiatives aimed at fostering long-term innovation.
A key part of this evolution is RTP 3.0, a strategic vision set to guide the next fifty years of development for the Park. Recent updates to land use policies and zoning regulations have paved the way for sustainable mixed-use projects across RTP’s 7,000 acres. According to officials, these changes are designed to preserve what makes RTP unique while offering flexibility for future needs. Implementation steps planned for 2026 include new development standards and updated design guidelines.
The planning process behind RTP 3.0 included extensive input from stakeholders throughout the region. “The Foundation Board and staff are grateful to all who helped contribute to and lead this regional effort,” said Scott Levitan, President and CEO of the Research Triangle Foundation of NC.
Two major development projects are also moving forward within RTP. The Triangle Mobility Hub, supported by a $25 million federal RAISE grant through GoTriangle, will break ground in late 2027 as the Park’s first large-scale transit-oriented development project intended to improve transportation access for employees, residents, and visitors.
In addition, Hub RTP continues its shift toward mixed-use spaces with phase one welcoming residents, employers, and retailers into a walkable district anchored by Horseshoe at Hub RTP—a project recognized as “Best New Development” by Triangle CREW and described by The News & Observer as a “foodie wonderland.” For the first time in RTP’s history, people are now living within the Park following completion of MAA Nixie’s initial 406-unit apartment project that places homes close to workplaces and amenities.
RTP remains one of North Carolina’s most important economic centers as it adapts to changing demands while preparing for future generations.
“RTP remains a cornerstone of North Carolina’s innovation economy,” said Scott Levitan. “As the Park continues to evolve, the Foundation and its partners are positioning the Park—and the Research Triangle region—to thrive for generations to come.”
