Red Hat has announced the introduction of Red Hat Edge Manager, a new solution designed to manage fleets of edge devices. This product is available as a technology preview and aims to provide greater scalability, simplified management, and enhanced security for overseeing thousands of devices from a single console.

The announcement was made at the Red Hat Summit in Boston on May 20, 2025. Red Hat Edge Manager is intended to streamline edge computing infrastructure and application oversight, focusing on end-to-end security capabilities. It targets various applications, including retail point-of-sale systems and industrial machinery in remote locations.

The centralized management approach required for effective edge device and software management poses several challenges such as connectivity demands and operational complexity. Red Hat Edge Manager addresses these issues by offering an elastic and resilient experience while aiming to reduce costs and enhance control over thousands of edge sites.

Key features of Red Hat Edge Manager include:

– Fleet management: Allows deployment of apps and infrastructure through a policy-based approach.
– Skills gap mitigation: Provides a user-friendly environment with simplified management.
– Proactive device insights: Offers customizable alerts for monitoring critical device resources.
– Hardened device communications: Utilizes mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) for secure communication.
– Flexible management options: Supports both on-premises and cloud alternatives.
– Resilient agent architecture: Ensures scalable device management even in challenging network conditions.
– Lifecycle management: Facilitates secure onboarding, decommissioning, and upgrades.

Optimized for modern container-centric workflows, Red Hat Edge Manager supports containerized workloads across Podman, Docker, and Kubernetes. This allows users to define configurations for individual devices or entire fleets with automated rollouts.

Francis Chow, vice president and general manager of In-Vehicle Operating System and Edge at Red Hat stated that “Red Hat Edge Manager represents a bold step forward in empowering organizations to confidently manage their increasingly distributed edge.”

Red Hat Edge Manager is now available as a technology preview within Red Hat Device Edge.
