Red Hat has announced a collaboration with PTSB, one of Ireland’s leading retail banks, to implement a cloud-native modernization program. The initiative is centered on Red Hat OpenShift, which serves as the bank’s primary platform for faster software delivery and aims to make the business more agile and resilient while enhancing customer experiences.
PTSB has already introduced new features through this platform, such as Digital Card Services and SEPA Instant Payments. These additions are part of the bank’s strategy to deepen customer relationships, diversify income streams, and offer personalized experiences in response to changing customer behaviors.
The partnership began after PTSB identified an alignment in values with Red Hat—openness, innovation, and collaboration. As part of a Red Hat Open Innovation Labs residency, PTSB adopted Red Hat OpenShift to support microservices within its mobile banking application. This effort provided teams at PTSB with improved skills and confidence, leading the bank to use OpenShift for key software delivery across various value streams.
The new environment also uses Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform for centralized management and relies on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for consistency across critical workloads. The first application launched was Digital Card Services, allowing customers greater control over card management. Following this, the payments platform managing SEPA Instant Payments was migrated using the same approach, reducing delivery times significantly. The bank now plans to move all existing microservices and digital capabilities onto OpenShift.
According to Red Hat and PTSB officials, these changes have led to several benefits:
– Improved customer experience through better service speed and channel resilience.
– Increased developer productivity with quicker onboarding.
– Faster modernization by adopting transparent best practices.
– Accelerated time-to-market for updates due to increased automation; infrastructure provisioning times improved by 284% via self-service.
– More predictable delivery timelines aiding better planning.
– Easier business expansion thanks to simplified integration methods.
– Improved sustainability by scaling services according to demand.
– A positive cultural impact from team-first approaches and earlier testing/security practices.
Hans Roth, Senior Vice President & General Manager EMEA at Red Hat said: “Red Hat is proud to support PTSB’s mission to unlock the cloud capability of its organisation through standardising on Red Hat platforms and simplifying the experience for its teams. PTSB is leading the way in differentiating its brand through delivering better software faster – whether that’s rolling out a new service or making iterations to its existing app. Red Hat OpenShift is able to scale with PTSB as it expands, helping the bank to improve reliability of services, reduce risk and focus more energies on innovation.”
Tom Hayes, Chief Technology Officer at PTSB commented: “PTSB’s promise to be Altogether More Human means that we bring the best of technology and our people together to solve real customer needs and deliver a better banking experience. Our continued successful digital evolution relies on a foundation of efficient, resilient and flexible technology. Red Hat cloud-native platforms have played a key role in enhancing the agility and efficiency of our digital, voice and in-person channels, further enabling us to differentiate through exceptional customer experiences.”
Jason Barry, Head of Digital Enablement at PTSB added: “The collaboration between Red Hat and PTSB has been productive from the start, thanks to a strong cultural alignment and a shared commitment to our Purpose and Ambition. Beyond engineering expertise, Red Hat has brought creativity and openness to facilitate our move to cloud-native methods and technologies. One of the greatest advantages of our new Red Hat-based platform and modern application development approach is we enable teams to self-solve problems if they arise, which ultimately manifests in greater customer value, faster.”
