Red Hat has announced the launch of Red Hat Developer Lightspeed, a portfolio of generative AI solutions aimed at improving developer productivity through intelligent and context-aware assistance. The new offering integrates with Red Hat’s developer tools to help streamline workflows for application modernization and cloud-native development.

Red Hat Developer Lightspeed is available as part of Red Hat Developer Hub and within the migration toolkit for applications (MTA) for customers with an Advanced Developer Suite subscription. The AI-powered assistants are designed to be accessible directly within developers’ existing workflows.

According to James LaBocki, senior director of Product Management at Red Hat, “Red Hat Developer Lightspeed is designed to empower developers and organizations to build and modernize applications faster, all while keeping up with important operational standards.”

The solutions offer two main integrations. First, Red Hat Developer Lightspeed for Red Hat Developer Hub acts as an AI virtual assistant focused on non-coding tasks such as application design exploration, documentation drafting, test plan generation, and troubleshooting. This feature uses a chat-like interface in the console and supports a “bring your own model” approach, enabling teams to choose their preferred large language models based on performance or privacy needs.

Second, the integration with migration toolkit for applications automates source code refactoring inside integrated development environments (IDEs). Unlike traditional code editors, this assistant understands migration challenges and adapts over time by learning from successful migrations. This capability is intended to speed up refactoring processes and reduce costs during modernization projects.

Alongside these AI features, Red Hat also released migration toolkit for applications 8 (MTA 8), which introduces automated replatforming capabilities from Cloud Foundry to Red Hat OpenShift. By automating deployment artifact generation, MTA 8 aims to minimize manual work during application replatforming efforts.

James Labocki added: “We believe the future of AI isn’t just about better models, but about putting intelligent assistance directly into developers’ hands where they work. Red Hat Developer Lightspeed is designed to empower developers and organizations to build and modernize applications faster, all while keeping up with important operational standards. This is a significant step towards providing a secure foundation for truly unprecedented scale and speed in software development.”

Currently, Red Hat Developer Lightspeed for Red Hat Developer Hub is in developer preview and included with relevant subscriptions. The version for migration toolkit for applications is now generally available.
