Red Hat has announced the public preview of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Microsoft Azure Red Hat OpenShift. This new offering aims to help organizations migrate virtual machines (VMs) from existing platforms to a scalable, cloud-native platform. The announcement was made at the Red Hat Summit in Boston.

Chris Wright, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Red Hat, stated, “As organizations continue to modernize and move away from legacy virtualization solutions, it is critical to choose a secure computing foundation for the future that can adapt to their current and evolving multi-infrastructure environments.”

Azure Red Hat OpenShift is jointly managed by Red Hat and Microsoft. It aims to reduce complexities associated with managing infrastructure while enabling IT teams to focus on innovation rather than routine maintenance. With this new virtualization feature, organizations can benefit from a consistent hybrid cloud stack supporting both VMs and containers.

The platform promises several benefits:

– Accelerated VM migration: Built-in migration tooling and automation capabilities simplify the process.
– Simplified operations: A unified view allows seamless management of VMs and containers.
– Infrastructure modernization: Organizations can build and deploy applications at scale using Kubernetes-based platforms.
– Resource optimization: DevOps productivity increases while deployment times decrease.

Brendan Burns, corporate vice president of Azure Compute at Microsoft, commented on the collaboration with Red Hat. He said, “As customers modernize and move their apps from traditional virtual-machine-based fabrics that are on-premises to modern Kubernetes platforms, some components still need to run on traditional virtual machines for a while. To address this, Microsoft and Red Hat are collaborating to bring open source innovation from the KubeVirt project into Azure Red Hat OpenShift.”

The service is available as a self-managed operator in public preview. Organizations can apply their Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) and use the Azure Migration and Modernization Program (AMMP). Additionally, customers can leverage the Azure Hybrid Benefit for existing licenses.

The Red Hat Summit continues with keynotes addressing modernized infrastructure and hybrid cloud evolution.
